PR Newsletter October 2022

Hello Rotarians & Families, Guests & Visitors…

September started with Onam’s festivities and also ended with many other festivals that came up in the month. Festivals always bring joy and happiness in abundance.

Rotary gives us an opportunity to do good to the world and our club marched ahead to serve the community. To give a perspective,

The value of anything is realized the most in situations:

  • When it is not available
  • When we want however it is beyond our reach
  • When we have a crisis
  • When it is all about existence or identity

Our beneficiaries are people from a variety of age groups and backgrounds; however, they fit into one or the other criteria mentioned above.

This month took us back into the peak pandemic period when our Past President Prabodh Sharma and the entire team of Rodeos had tirelessly worked in the Vision year to make things happen in the typical β€˜Rodeo’ style. This is despite everyone having their own share of challenges.

RIDE Raju’s felicitation by the District Leaders was a momentous occasion for the Rodeo family.

Our flagship Musculoskeletal project at Sastur came back into action after the break in the pandemic period. This project is actively being driven by Rtn Naresh Shenoy in memory of Dr Joy Milind Patankar.

The trip undertaken by Rtn Hema Subramanian is one of grit and determination and how it beautifully showcases that age was, is, and will never be a barrier.

We continued our journey to shine on the Rotary platforms through our coverage in Rotary News and its website

Our club projects and activities were pretty visible across all the social channels. (Click on the links at the bottom of this page if you are not already following our page)

This was also a month that brought in a lot of bonding amongst the members through a variety of events that were conducted!

To begin with, let’s read some of the comments that our members had for the previous month’s bulletin – if you have not had the chance to read it – pls click here.

Under this initiative, Nutritional Food Kits were distributed to 100 patients from a financially challenged section of society at Shatabdi Hospital. They will be given these kits every month for twelve months. The kits were handed over to the patients at the hands of Chief Guest Dr Navin Shewale and his wife Mrs Vaishali Shewale.

Dr Joy Patankar Musculoskeletal Camp @ Sastur

This Musculoskeletal Corrective Surgery camp is a joint project of Rotary Deonar (Dist 3141), Rotary Club of Ambernath (Dist 3142) andΒ  Rotary Club of Coventry Phoenix, UK in association with Prashant Paricharak Social Foundation, Pandharpur at Sparsh Rural Hospital, Sastur, near Sholapur. The Musculoskeletal Team is led by Avenue Chair Naresh Shenoy.

One of the reasons for the deformities is due to consanguine marriages i.e. marriages between individuals who are closely related. The surgeries correct the deformities to a large extent but cannot make the patients normal like us.

Following is the experience that came in from Rtn Shivani Bansal who attended the camp for the 1st time:

The entire treatment is free of cost which would cost around 2-3 lakh. The doctors who charge a huge fees in Mumbai, operate free and put in long hours. I saw patients come in for corrections from 15 day old to 18 years old. It was an exhilarating experience. A couple of patients came in on their fours limbs and post surgery they were absolutely straight on the stretcher. As a witness in the OT, I got to know so many nitty gritties about the medical science. The doctors, whom we see only during consultations, can be so jovial otherwise. The camaraderie that happens in such camps is awesome. Arrangements were basic but couldn’t have been better considering the infrastructure at the village. Overall it was a really nice trip and am glad that this opportunity came my way and I went ahead with with it with full support of my family.

2nd Blood Donation Camp

Rtn Jaisal Jetsey came back in action with the 2nd Blood Donation Camp that happened at Ghatkopar Station (East). The team from Sion Hospital did the collection and processing.

It was organised in partnership with RC Chembur, RC Mumbai Sion, RC Mumbai Ghatkopar, RC Mumbai Ghatkopar West, and RC Bombay Uptown.

Celebrations on β€˜Rose Day’

The objective of the event was to spend time with cancer patients and brighten their day and encourage them. Rose Day has celebrated the world over on 22nd September for cancer patients to connect with them and brighten their spirits to win the fight against cancer.

We distributed 200 snack boxes to Paediatric Cancer Patients on this occasion at Sion Hospital where the entire event took place.

An entertainment program organised for the patients and celebrity performers Nakuul Mehta, Jankee Mehta, Alek, and Anjani enthralled the audience with singing, dancing and a magic show. Renowned singer Leslie Lewis performed with Kavya Joanes.

Our veteran member Rtn Vishnu Kamat expressed his heartfelt gratitude also to CPAA for giving us this opportunity!

He also expressed his thanks to Praveen from President-Elect – Sangeeta Shahani’s office for the timely availability of snack boxes and all the logistical support!

Rtn Vishnu’s feelings came out in the following words:

Bacche log really relished the contents! The smiles on their faces changed the Hospital OPD into a garden-like atmosphere – at least for some time!

Following a comment from Director – Medical: Rtn Jaisal Jetsey says it all:

Ajoba on the prowl again with his bag of goodies for the baccha party. Kudos to you Vishnu Kaka and to Sangeeta for coming up with the box of goodies.

Free Eye and Dental Checkup Camp Β

Jointly with RC Chembur, we organised a Free Eye and Dental Checkup Camp for the students of Matoshree Vidyamandir in the Mankhurd area. Rtn Dr Meera actively contributed by doing the dental checkup of the students. About 400 students benefitted from this Camp.

Meethi Boond – Distribution of Water filter

The objective of this project was to inculcate awareness about water sanitation and safeguarding against waterborne diseases which spurt especially during monsoons.

The idea was to also reduce absenteeism from work and school thereby enhancing productivity.

With much research we came across a water filter which was economical from a running perspective, didn’t need electricity for running and in addition, there was also no maintenance cost associated as the candles had a life of close to 10 years.

Cleaning of the containers was quite easy and there was neither wastage of water nor any loss of essential minerals from water, unlike an RO filter.

The beneficiaries were very happy to receive the water filters which will cut down on their illnesses due to polluted water and keep them healthy.

Rtn. Shivani Bansal shared the update on the distribution of 100 water filters to people of Gadkari Khan Centre and Subash Chandra Bose School at Maharashtra Nagar

RC Deonar co-hosted the District TRF Seminar

RC Deonar did Silver Co-hosting of the 1st TRF Seminar held at JW Marriott, Sahar, Andheri.

The baby is going back home hale and hearty after a successful Cardiac surgery at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital under RCD Global Grant GG2122113.

Manish pursued his interest in astrology from 2014 onwards and since then it has grown tremendously. He now has clientele in India about 5 countries.

Donation of Sports Uniforms to an Army School

President Vidhya Subramanian, Padma Kapoor and Shivani Bansal went for the 1st ever visit this army school.

PP Padma Kapoor donated school sports uniforms and milk-based drinks to the young soldiers at the Vijay Army School at Chikhale Panvel in memory of her late father Veteran Major Desaiji. Major Desaiji was an Army person and dedicated to the cause of grooming children for entering the Armed Forces.

Children come from lower strata of society and hence cannot afford to buy dresses. The beneficiaries organised a welcome ceremony. Our members performed a small puja at the statue of Shivaji Maharaj, followed by a welcome song and dance by the children. The children were very happy to receive all the gifts and they expressed their gratitude for the club.

RC Deonar will be associated with this Army School for some very prestigious projects in the near future.
